Ecolabels as drivers for the green transition

European Parliament, MEP Salons

Hosted by MEPs Heléne Fritzon (S&D) and Sirpa Pietikäinen (EPP).
In partnership with the officially recognised ISO 14024 ecolabels: Nordic Swan Ecolabel, Blue Angel, Austrian Ecolabel, Milieukeur and the EU Ecolabel.

As Europe seeks to strengthen its competitiveness, resilience and strategic autonomy, public procurement can play a central role in creating demand for circular and more sustainable products and services.

The Public Procurement Act, together with the upcoming Circular Economy Act, offer a key opportunity to make Europe’s purchasing power a strategic driver of a more resource-efficient and circular economy. To realise this potential, public buyers and market actors need practical, reliable tools that translate policy objectives into clear procurement requirements. Officially recognised ISO 14024 type 1 ecolabels offer independently verified, life-cycle-based criteria. They make it easier to reward circular design, resource efficiency, durability, reparability and lower environmental impacts in public procurement.

• How demand from public buyers can support innovation, circular business models and European competitiveness.
• How officially recognised ISO 14024 type 1 ecolabels can work as practical tools for green public procurement and a more circular economy.
